US Courts break ground on Mobile, Ala. federal courthouse

Mobile, Ala.— The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), U.S. District Court, Southern District in Alabama, and local elected officials today broke ground on the Mobile, Alabama federal courthouse construction and renovation project. The $90M initiative includes a new 155,600 s.f. courthouse, followed by renovations to the historic Campbell U.S. Courthouse to be completed in Fiscal Year 2020. The project will consolidate court operations out of leased space into a sustainable, high-performing, and secure campus that meets LEED Gold standards, saves taxpayer dollars and spurs local development.

Lee Becker, a partner with Hartman-Cox Architects in Washington, told Mobilians that his firm envisions the building serving as a “bridge” between the overlapping central business district and the De Tonti Square Historic District. He said the design team spent time in Mobile getting to know the surroundings and the history.

The federal government has awarded the main contract to build a new federal courthouse in downtown Mobile, meaning that a project more than a decade in the making may finally break ground by the end of the year.

The $89 million contract went to a team led by W.G. Yates & Sons, which will oversee the construction project from its office in Biloxi, Miss. A pair of architectural firms from Washington, D.C., URS and Hartman-Cox Architects, are also part of the team.
