The new gallery fits into a previously inaccessible outdoor courtyard bordered by the Byzantine gallery, two hallways and McKim, Mead and White's renowned 1929 music room. The gallery is surrounded on three sides by a colonnaded ambulatory, whose paired Ionic columns reproduce those in the music room. McKim, Mead and White's Palladian window was retained. Unlike the music room, however, the new gallery is suffused with natural light from a glazed opening in the barrel-vaulted ceiling.
